Why MYOB makes you log in after inactivity

Have you noticed a change in how MYOB makes you login? They’re starting to do as they are told by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), that’s why.

We’ve seen lots of login issues with Xero in the past when they focused on authentication for their users and now it’s MYOB announcing improvements in their security – this time for inactivity.

These changes could be called innovation and are often pitched that way by MYOB and Xero but they are actually requirements imposed on software developers by the ATO.

This image from the ATO website shows that they prefer users to have to login after only 15 minutes of inactivity – that enough time to go to the toilet and make yourself a cup of coffee!

Australian Federal Gov & ATO enforcing change

A recent change from Xero which is also encouraged by our Federal Government is eInvoicing. This might not seem like a big deal when several million Xero users got the email this week but it is a massive change in how invoices are delivered to customers – particularly Business to Business (B2B) transactions.

If you invoice a customer with an ABN it goes directly into their accounting software – Now THAT is a true CLOSED NETWORK!

So if you start seeing this type of screen more often you know its the ATO making MYOB and Xero increase their security.

Another interesting requirement that I came across is for all accounting and taxation data to be hosted in Australia.

I recall some accountants saying that they would NEVER use online software because they prefer to have their accounting data on their own in-office server! It appears that Governments are now forcing changes to keep things onshore.
