Office Admin Workers Day – gift ideas for staff

Office admin workers are the key employees which keep every business running, large or small. They perform the tasks required to keep some form of order and record keeping for the business and without their assistance everything could turn messy quickly.

There is a celebration in a small number of countries for these works and it is often known as Secretary’s Day.

It is an opportunity for bosses or managers to give gifts to their secretary’s and some common gifts tend to be gestures of appreciation that are relatively easy to give in a workplace setting. These often include:

  1. Flowers: A bouquet or a potted plant is a classic and very common gift.
  2. Cards: Usually signed by the boss or the team, expressing thanks and appreciation. This is often given alongside another gift.
  3. Chocolates or Candy: A box of good quality chocolates or other sweets is a popular choice.
  4. Lunch: Taking the administrative professional out for lunch, or having a special lunch catered or ordered in.
  5. Gift Cards: Very popular as they allow the recipient to choose something they genuinely want or need. Common choices include coffee shops, restaurants, general retailers (like Amazon, Target), or Visa/Mastercard gift cards.
  6. Coffee/Tea: A gift basket with specialty coffees, teas, or accessories like a nice mug.
  7. Small Desk Plants or Succulents: A low-maintenance plant to brighten up their workspace.

You can read more about it here.

The office is also a meeting place for all employees and place where all different types of personalities meet and try to work together on common goals and tasks.

There’s no better place to see this in a comedic form in The Office TV series (UK and US).

Personalities are very different between employees from:

  • sales and marketing,
  • technical support
  • engineering
  • trades
  • customer service
  • accounts

Here are the key features of the day:

  1. Names: Administrative Professionals Day, Secretaries Day, Admins Day.
  2. Frequency: Observed yearly.
  3. Scope: Celebrated in a small number of countries.
  4. Status: Not a public holiday.
  5. Timing (Context): Often falls within Administrative Professionals Week (last full week of April in the US).
  6. Purpose: Recognizes the work of various administrative support roles (secretaries, assistants, receptionists, etc.).
  7. Typical Observance: Gifts like cards, flowers, chocolates, and lunches are common gestures of appreciation.
