I’ve never actually done it

People are interesting aren’t they?

I recall when we opened our first Sydney training centre how I took people through a needs analysis to determine what they knew and didn’t know. I could quickly see the difference between what people say and what they do.

We were doing most of the training for clients of Commonwealth Rehab Services when the Internet was in it’s infancy and lots of people were learning about how to send an email!

I sat down with a gentleman named Paul who loved painting but he needed to learn basic computer skills so he could find work. We spoke for around 15 minutes about the Absolute Beginners concepts of how to use Windows and a mouse and we got onto the topic of email. He then rattled on an told me all about email – he knew a lot.

“Email is how the whole world can communicate instantly no matter where you are”, he confirmed.

He had me convinced that he knew his stuff and wouldn’t need much training so I asked him to “send me an email”.

I’ve never actually done it, he told me with surprise

I had a similar experience recently that reminded me of my experience with Paul and his Email knowledge.

I was speaking with a lady who was a real Xero fan girl.

She had seen their sponsorship of the Women’s World Cup and had even done their FREE Xero Courses so she was speaking their praises confidently.

“Why was she speaking with me?”, I thought, and then the reality came out – SHE HAD NEVER EVER USED THE SOFTWARE!

We’ve even had students who’ve completed a Cert IV in Bookkeeping and Accounting who’ve never actually used the Xero software.

Key to learning is by doing

The only way to truly learn something is by doing it. We tell our kids that they have to do it and go through the experience to learn and speak confidently and it’s the same with a course.

When you go through the challenge of actually balancing the books and reconciling you can speak confidently to any employer about your experience.
