Another price increase from Xero – 4 straight years of price increases sends social media mad?

Common People Black Mirror episode reflects business sentiment towards Xero price increases - Learn Online with Xero Courses

It’s interesting how negative the sentiment is on Linkedin and Facebook when you start seeing annual price increases for Xero.

MYOB has been smashed in it’s social media marketing campaign for their MYOB Solo software but Xero’s CEO was smashed on Linkedin for the continuing increases in price of Xero.

You can push the innovation angle for so long but it seems like Xero are trying to test how much their clients can really afford.

There is a link in their price increase email to their innovations page and I wonder if they did the price increase just to get more traffic to that part of their website!?

The question is:

  1. Is that innovation worth the cost to your business and do you use those features, and
  2. What are your alternatives.
  3. Do you need all this extra functionality that Xero is promoting?

These increase in subscriptions seem a lot like the recent Black Mirror episode “Common People” where users have no real choice but to keep paying more and more for the software because it is hard to find an alternative.

If you are into dark comedy or want to see how bad things can get from a technology perspective this episode has a very interesting take about subscriptions and premium serviceswait until you when the subscriber starts talking about sponsored products!

Xero justifies it’s price increase using Innovation

Xero did a great job with an earlier price increase by telling their users about the massive gain they received with the inclusion of Hubdoc in their Xero feature list.

It was portrayed as a massive saving compared to the monthly fee and it worked very well at a time when other software companies were simply increasing their subscriptions with bland corporate notification emails.

They’re pushing the innovation angle again but users are pushing back.

There are a couple trends which seemed to dominate the small business course market in 2024 and most of them related to replacing your bookkeeper!

There also appeared to be a lot of ambiguity in job descriptions between Office Admin and Business Administration topics.

The other major observation is why did Intuit buy MailChimp and do email marketing companies make more money than accounting software companies?

The range of skills and software knowledge for office and business admin employees is widening as they perform more and more of the daily tasks for each business.

A bunch of videos on Youtube or even Udemy is commonly called a course these days so Xero course prices vary widely. Do I need one to one training to learn MYOB and Xero?

When I see this comment I wonder if it’s not just based on the fear some students have about learning by themselves.

They’re worried about what happens if they get stuck on something, what happens if they don’t understand the instructions and wanting to know that someone will be available to help them.

I started teaching students how to use computer software on a one to one basis and thought to myself,

“these people are all spending a lot of money to go through the same basic steps”.

The problem with a lot of courses is that they just dump you with information and then get you to answer some questions in an assessment or test – not EzyLearn, we guide you through learning journeys.

Is Xero really promoting websites for $2,700

GoDaddy websites created for you - Xero Training Sydney

Xero has always used its partner network to reach it’s users. I remember one claim made by Xero that they are the accounting software of choice for property and real estate businesses but it was really their integration partner Re-Leased that did the heavy lifting.

I received an email from Xero promoting GoDaddy. It was a promotion where GoDaddy would create the website for you and optimise it for Search engines.

What surprised me the most is that GoDaddy will actually create the website for you – not just host it.
