Will the Self-Education Cap Deter You from Further Study?

Online study is flexible and cost effective.
Online study is flexible and cost effective.

For a country that has long considered itself the “clever nation” — the land responsible for the cochlear implant, the hills hoist, and the black box flight recorder — the Federal Government’s proposed $2,000 cap on self-education expenses seems a little surprising.

The Government announced the self-education cap two weeks ago and since then, speculation has been rife that the cap will deter employees and businesses from undertaking further study.

Annette Tsouris, Director of Studies at Australian Workplace Training has been quoted in the website, Smart Company, as saying that though the $2,000 cap was reasonable, for people currently employed and looking to up-skill, “the average price of a course is around $3,000.” While the cost of post-graduate studies at university usually run into the tens-of-thousands.

Online Training — The Cost Effective Alternative

Of course, costly face-to-face study and post-graduate degrees aren’t the only learning methods available. Online training courses — in all kinds of areas for instance, MYOB, Excel and WordPress — have become popular, not just because of their flexible delivery method, but because online study companies don’t have the same overheads as face-to-face institutions and can offer courses at considerably lower prices — the average cost of an online training course at EzyLearn, for instance, is less than $270!

Although the cap on self-education expenses could do well to be a little higher — $5,000 per person, say — the cap itself won’t deter people from further study; from gaining the power of knowledge. It will only serve as an impetus for individuals and businesses to investigate other non-traditional learning options, such as online study and training methods.

Our Online Courses Below the Cap

For budding entrepreneurs or individuals seeking the skills to start their own business, or to manage a small business, our Small Business Management course is currently only $1,397 — well below the proposed cap.

We have reduced the price of our Small Business Management course, which is usually more expensive, for a limited time to allow you the opportunity to gain the necessary skills you need to start their own business or gain employment managing a small business without exceeding the self-education cap.

Take advantage of this great offer now and enrol in our Small Business Management course; discover the valuable skills you need to successfully manage a small business, including writing a business plan, conducting market research, legal and risk management, and much more!

Do you stand out when looking for work?

Create Postcards to use with your resume to find a jobIt’s that time of year when people are turning their new years resolutions into action and we’ve noticed a massive increase in students searching for help in writing resumes, as well as resume and business plan templates for those who are looking at starting a business.

I was speaking with Rehab Consultant Ross Miller, who helps people who’ve been injured at work find more sedentary office type jobs, and he mentioned an interesting idea.
Create a Postcard with your details on it and attach it to every resume you send
At first it seemed a little absurd but after we got talking and he revealed more of his idea it made a lot of sense.

When you submit your resume with your job application you end up as a document in a pile and for years people have been looking for ways of standing out from the crowd. With the advent of new printing technologies like moo.com in the UK, it is becoming easier to produce and print a professional, full colour, Postcard for not a lot of money.

Social-Media and online MYOB Training coursesRoss’s idea is to create a Postcard with your photo and a brief bio about yourself on one side, plus an image that reflects the industry you want to work in (picture of a retail shop or office etc) and some words to describe it on the other side. What do you think of that idea?

If you like this idea let us know on our Facebook page. If you have other innovative ideas share them on our Facebook page.

What is Teleworking?

Teleworking from home in Australia - NBN

In a nutshell, teleworking is the ability for employees to work remotely, usually from a home office, rather than travelling to the workplace. And it’s something that Australia, and indeed, the rest of the world has been moving towards for some time.

If you think about it, ever since the widespread adoption of email, the wheels have been in motion for an era where people could opt to work from home rather than commuting to the workplace every day.

For a while, though, it has been a bit of a logistical nightmare. If you’ve ever tried to work remotely before, then chances are, at some point you’ve uttered one or all of these complaints: “This file is too large for me to email”,
I don’t have that software installed on my home PC
or “My Internet’s really slow. I might as well just come into the office”.

But when you throw things like broadband Internet, laptops, tablet devices, smart phones and the latest little life-saver, cloud accounting and storage software (like Dropbox) into the mix, working remotely, or teleworking, slowly but surely got easier.

The benefits of teleworking to employees and employers, plus also to the Australian government are huge, which is why the Australian government spearheaded the move to a National Broadband Network (NBN), which, when rollout is complete, will see high-speed Internet cabled into nearly every Australian home (93%).

The NBN will give you the freedom to things like enrol in distance education or complete one of our MYOB courses, work from home, or even start a home-based business without having to worry about poor or unreliable internet coverage.

Teleworking is the future of all Australian workplaces – you can learn about the benefits of teleworking here.

Why spend in June if you’ll just owe in July?

MYOB Profit and Loss Report and balance sheet in reporting training courseConversations amongst business colleagues and business owners appear to suggest that many people are in a rush to spend before June 30. I spoke with someone who feverishly exclaimed that everyone should get private medical insurance! It’s all good and well to get in a panic before the end of the financial year but if you didn’t have the correct information before now and the decisions you make are not based on known facts then why make them?

It’s the time of year where all the data entry from Day-to-Day Transactions should be up to date, you should know the value of depreciation for your fixed assets and have a good idea of the value of your tax and GST liabilities. A profit and loss report and balance sheet will provide you with the information you need and if these figures are ready then spending decisions can be made. This is the time for reporting and reconciliation.

If you simply find yourself with money in the bank but don’t want it to go to the tax man think again, you might need it to pay your liabilities next month. For now, enjoy the bulging bank balance.

Remember. Compliance is the measure of success of your business plans so be compliant as soon as possible every month.

How long will an online training course take?

online MYOB Training Course and SupportSometimes we use the EzyLearn Blog to inform readers about general course information. Our online courses are completely self-paced so you can complete the online MYOB course in 7 days, 2 to 3 weeks or just use it as a resource.

It’s that time of the year when traditional training centres start their class-based training courses. When EzyLearn operated three physical training centres in Sydney we spent a lot of time scheduling which courses. We asked ourselves questions like

 • What day should the course start
 • Which course should be held on a Tuesday/Wednesday etc
 • Should we schedule it for the morning, all day, evening or Saturday
 • How many weeks should the course last
 • Which training room and centres should we hold the course,
 • Who will the trainer be
 • Is the trainer available

Office administration (Microsoft Word and Excel etc), MYOB (Bookkeeping software), Website Design (using WordPress) and Absolute Beginners courses have always been scheduled this way so people are used to talking about courses this way. One of the most common questions we get asked is “how long will it take?” and our first temptation is to say “How long do you want it to take”.

Our online MYOB training course includes 5 courses for the price you’d expect to pay for one course (It includes MYOB Setup, Day-to-Day Transactions, Reporting & BAS and MYOB Payroll Intro) and the contents of the course is what we used to cover in approximately 4 full time days of training.

Another great aspect about an online training course is you can use it for the rest of your working life without paying any extra (if you choose that enrolment option). So you can complete just the MYOB Day-to-Day Transactions course (# 502) and when you need it you can complete the Bank Reconciliation and BAS courses.

To enrol into our online MYOB training course click here.

In the forthcoming weeks we are going to write about

 • Using Microsoft Excel to enter Payroll information and then enter that information into MYOB
 • Differences between MYOB AccountRight version 2011 and previous versions
 • New content for the MYOB Payroll Course

We’ll also introduce you to Jerry Lame. He’s the new Ordinary Man. Follow Jerry’s journey of starting a business, writing business plans, creating a budget and forecasts and then implementing it. You’ll learn how to use software for practical purposes along the way.

National Secretary's Day - Use online courses to learn Microsoft Office Excel, PowerPoint and Word

Office admin workers are the key employees which keep every business running, large or small. They perform the tasks required to keep some form of order and record keeping for the business and without their assistance everything could turn messy quickly.

There is a celebration in a small number of countries for these works and it is often known as Secretary’s Day.

It is an opportunity for bosses or managers to give gifts to their secretary’s and some common gifts tend to be gestures of appreciation that are relatively easy to give in a workplace setting. These often include:

Do you need to learn Email Marketing?

Mailchimp Course for Email Marketing - Create a new email campaign - Digital Marketing Academy

I must admit that I have written a lot about email marketing lately and it’s ever since Intuit bought MailChimp and our monthly bill went up and some of the features were stripped out.

I then heard about Aweber increasing their prices massively and thought there must be something at play in the world of email marketing software.

The most disappointing part about what MailChimp has done is that they’ve stripped back the ability to create more than 4 automations unless you upgrade to a higher plan.

Everything about MailChimp is screaming out MORE MONEY, MORE MONEY, MORE MONEY!

Learn MYOB one skill at a time

MYOB is now better value for money than Xero and online

MYOB has struggled for a long time against Xero but now seems to be in a sweet spot for price vs features.

MYOB is used by more than 1,000,000 users in Australia so it is a very good skill to have if you are looking for bookkeeping jobs or business admin jobs.

When we started delivering MYOB courses in a classroom in Dee Why in the late 1990’s I realised early that learning bookkeeping skills is best to do one step at a time. When I say 1 step I mean in training sessions that last no more than about 2-3 hours.

That’s why we created Micro courses in MYOB.

Visit the MYOB Training Course information page and see each of these different skill levels. You’ll see that it is based on the case studies I’ve written recently about like Flockana Cafe and Trim and Styles Hairdressing Salon.

MYOB Business and AccountRight pricing plans - Learn MYOB online

MYOB costs less than Xero but now have similar features and that makes it an attractive choice of accounting software.

Xero on the other hand are constantly increasing their monthly subscriptions and that has caused a bit of an up cry for some users.
