Sales Tax Simplified With Xero’s TaxJar Integration

Sales tax might not be high on the list of concerns for Aussie businesses since the introduction of the GST in 2000, but if you’re selling to the US it’s a whole different story.

The US doesn’t have a GST, so each state (and sometimes locality) has its own sales tax rate – which makes it difficult for online businesses to keep track of what they owe and when its due.

Whilst Xero organises all your e-commerce sales and transactions into an accounting system, it doesn’t account for how much of your income is money collected from your buyers as sales tax – which is money you must remit to the government.

HubSpot is a marketing system and CRM built for the modern day content marketing professional. Like most cloud-based services they have their own app store (they call it an ecosystem) and Xero recently boasted about being one of a select group of 16 promoted by Hubspot. They didn’t fair so well though.

Xero Accounting software offers inventory management features in their standard software but it has never been spectacular for companies where solid inventory management matters.

I saw that first hand when I was speaking with the owner of a Boating Sales, Repair and Retail business. That business ended up migrating AWAY from Xero and started using QuickBooks Online instead. This changes everything.

In June 2021 I announced a new Workforce Management Cast Study in development. In their most recent annual report to shareholders Xero announced the acquisition of yet another “integration” that sets it up to become the Sage of Small Business Accounting.

Sage and other ERM’s work on the basis of modules that provide a specific functionality but until now it was only really relevant for the big end of town. Now Xero will capture revenue from several apps rather than charge one price that includes everything. It’s going back to the days of Attache!

Xero Verify or Google Authenticator?

I spend a lot of time around website admin areas and online software so I’ve had to authenticate myself using Multi-Factor Authentication for several different online services and choose Google Authenticator.

Xero has recently announced their own Xero Verify app and although I would never use Xero as my authentication software I wanted to check it out and see how good it is. Turns out it’s not so good.

MYOB partnered with Bunnings to give tradies Smart Receipts and now they’re partnering with Telstra to give business phone customers 3 months free use of MYOB Essentials.

Telstra use the terms Essentials a LOT in their marketing for mobile phones, websites and now MYOB Essentials. Here’s what their offer looks like.

Most Afterpay transactions are centered around the selling of physical products that change ownership from the merchant to the customer. This evidence is enough to bind customers legally, but what happens if you provide professional services like bookkeeping or accounting?

Accountants and Bookkeepers, like many other professional service providers including Lawyers and solicitors charge for their time or defined outcomes (like fixed fees for a certain number of transactions).

Xero Status: “Can’t log in to Xero” Caused Global Problems

We’re so used to everything online being available all the time that we don’t think about the risks associated with a website being down. Xero experienced a MASSIVE issue relating to the ability for their users to login and use the software on the 27th July 2021. This meant that

Invoices couldn’t be created
Pay runs couldn’t be made
Accounts Receivable staff couldn’t see if customers had paid
Accounting staff couldn’t use Xero for their work

We all take for granted the benefits of having multiple staff logging in at the same time from different locations as well as automatic backups of our information, but this issue lasted from 8:25AM until 7:04PM – that’s 12 hours!

Xero is transparent about any issues and fixes about their software so you can see exactly what happened that day.

Xero vs GoDaddy Website Hosting Company Accounting Software? Attn: New Minimum Viable Website Service

Xero to re-elect Steven Aldrich as non-executive director - online customer service and receptionist services - Xero online training courses

When you look at the two companies Xero Accounting and GoDaddy hosting companies are very similar. They both provide cloud-based solutions, for a subscription fee and have small businesses as their major clients. They are both in a very good position to provide accounting software for their customers.

One of the Xero Directors sold an accounting software program to GoDaddy in 2012 and at the time TechCrunch reported that Accounting software is a logical service for them to provide to their small business clients. What does it mean for the future though?

Xero is well known for purchasing apps which integrate with it and provide vertical integration. The best known acquisition in recent years is the purchase of Hubdoc for receipt capture. This made Xero compete directly with some of the other companies who’ve been doing this for a while like Dext (formerly Receipt Bank) and AutoEntry.

Well they’ve done it again in the purchase this year of Planday in Europe for staff rostering, attendance and reporting. But how will they compete with QuickBooks Online and KeyPay?

It’s interesting and exciting that Xero now offer their Xero Learn service to training course publishers like EzyLearn for $6 per month. This ongoing access to Xero Accounting software seemed exciting at first but then I realised that it’s just accounting software! AND it’s just for training! AND 30 days is MORE than enough per case study!

Most students don’t want to access Xero accounting software forever. Even business owners don’t really want to pay an ongoing fee for their accounting software – they want something else..

Xero going up a pesky $2 rather than $27.50

It almost seemed like Xero was giving you $27.50 of extra value when they announced their $2 per month increase last week. These effects take effect on 18 March 2020 but not everyone wants Hubdoc and competitors like QuickBooks already offered similar functionality!

Xero has had a love/hate relationship with bookkeepers ever since the days when they promoted their accounting software as so easy that small business owners could use it themselves – without the cost of a bookkeeper – and it looks like they are well on their way with this mission.
